Klis Fortress sits on a blade-thin ridge above the Kozjak mountain pass, 8 km north of Split, commanding the only significant inland route between the Dalmatian coast and the interior of the Balkans. For centuries this single ridge controlled access to the richest port on the eastern Adriatic, and its fortress became the pivot of Croatian resistance to Ottoman expansion — a resistance that ultimately failed in 1537 but lasted long enough to become one of the defining narratives of Croatian national identity.

The fortress achieves its dramatic effect through position rather than scale: it is not vast, but it appears to grow from the ridge itself, its three defensive zones stacked vertically up the narrow spur with the sea visible in one direction and the Dinaric Alps in the other. The views from the upper battlements — across Split, Diocletian's Palace, the Dalmatian islands, and the mountains of Bosnia — are among the finest coastal panoramas in Croatia.

To contemporary visitors, Klis is probably best known as the filming location for Meereen, the Essos city where Daenerys Targaryen freed the slaves in HBO's Game of Thrones. The fortress's layered stone architecture and dramatic clifftop position made it ideal for the fictional city's exterior shots in Seasons 4 and 5. Game of Thrones tours from Split are now among the most popular activities in the region.

History

The ridge at Klis has been fortified since Illyrian times, and a Roman fortification existed here on the road between the coast and the interior. The medieval Croatian fortress was established by the Trpimirović dynasty in the 9th century and served as the seat of Croatian rulers before Zagreb became the capital.

Klis achieved its greatest historical significance during the Ottoman expansion into the Balkans in the 15th and 16th centuries. As Ottoman forces swept through Bosnia and began pressing toward the Dalmatian coast, Klis became the last major fortress between the Ottoman Empire and the Adriatic. The Croatian Captain Petar Kružić held the fortress for over 25 years against repeated Ottoman sieges — a resistance that made him a Croatian national hero. When Kružić was killed in battle in 1537 and the fortress finally fell, the Ottomans converted the church of St Vitus into a mosque and garrisoned the fortress for nearly 60 years.

In 1596, a Croatian Uskoci raiding force recaptured Klis in a surprise attack. The Venetians, who then controlled the Dalmatian coast, expelled the Uskoci garrison and dismantled parts of the fortress to prevent it falling back to the Ottomans. The Venetians held Klis through the 17th century, restoring and modifying the fortifications. The fortress passed to Austrian control in 1797 and fell into disuse as a military installation in the 19th century.

How to Visit

Getting there: Klis is 8 km north of Split. Bus line 22 runs from Split bus station (Domovinskog rata) to Klis approximately every 30 minutes (25-minute journey). By car, follow the E65/D1 road north from Split toward Sinj — the fortress is visible on the ridge and well signposted. There is a car park below the fortress entrance.

Game of Thrones connection: The fortress sells Game of Thrones maps showing the specific filming locations used for Meereen. Several Split-based tour operators offer combined Klis + GoT location tours. The best angles for Meereen recreation photographs are from the lower courtyard looking up at the main gate tower.

Medieval reenactments: Klis Fortress stages medieval combat reenactments on selected dates throughout the summer. Check the fortress website for specific events.

Combine with: Diocletian's Palace in Split (9 km south — one of the best-preserved Roman imperial residences in the world) and Trogir (27 km west — a UNESCO-listed medieval island city) make excellent additions to a Klis day.
