Loket castle sits on a rock that a river has almost swallowed. The Ohře River curves in a tight horseshoe around three sides of the cliff, leaving only a narrow neck of land connecting the rock to the surrounding hills — a natural island that required almost no artificial fortification to be defensible. 'Loket' means 'elbow' in Czech, and the name describes the position exactly: the river bends like a bent arm around the castle promontory, leaving the fortress isolated in the curve.
The castle was built by Bohemian kings from the 13th century as a royal seat in western Bohemia, and it served as one of the most important fortresses in the kingdom for several centuries. Emperor Charles IV, the greatest Czech ruler of the medieval period, was born nearby and held the castle in high regard. Holy Roman Emperors used it as a treasury and prison. Goethe — who took the cure at nearby Karlovy Vary four times — walked to Loket on each visit and declared it 'the most beautiful place in the world,' a verdict he repeated in his diaries.
International visitors often recognise Loket before knowing its name: the castle and town appeared as Montenegro in the James Bond film Casino Royale (2006), most notably in the scene where Daniel Craig as Bond escapes through the medieval streets. The combination of the river setting, the perfectly preserved medieval town below the castle, and the castle's own Romanesque rotunda and Gothic halls makes Loket one of the most complete and satisfying castle experiences in Bohemia — and far less crowded than Prague or Český Krumlov.
History
The first stone fortifications at Loket date from the early 13th century, when the Bohemian kings built a castle to control the strategic Ohře valley route. The castle was a royal seat of the Přemyslid and Luxembourg dynasties, and Emperor Charles IV — who ruled Bohemia and the Holy Roman Empire from 1346 to 1378 — held Loket as one of his favourite residences in western Bohemia.
The castle served as a royal prison at various points in its history. King Wenceslaus IV was imprisoned here briefly in 1402 during conflicts with the Bohemian nobility. The castle's strong walls and isolated river position made it a secure facility for high-value prisoners. In the 15th century it also served as a treasury, holding imperial crown jewels and archives.
The Habsburg emperors used Loket less frequently after the imperial capital was firmly established in Prague and Vienna, and by the 17th century the castle had passed to private hands and gradually declined. It was used as a prison for common criminals in the 18th and 19th centuries, which — paradoxically — preserved the structure by keeping it maintained and inhabited. Restoration for tourist visits began in the 20th century. The town of Loket was declared a historical preservation zone in 1978.
How to Visit
Getting there from Karlovy Vary: Loket is 12 km south-west of Karlovy Vary — about 20 minutes by car. By bus, regular services run from Karlovy Vary bus station to Loket throughout the day (about 30 minutes). Walking from the Loket bus stop to the castle through the medieval town takes about 10 minutes up a steep lane.
From Prague: Loket is 130 km west of Prague — about 1.5 hours by car. Many Prague day-tour operators offer Loket as part of a West Bohemia day trip combined with Karlovy Vary, which takes the logistics out of a day that is otherwise difficult by public transport alone.
The town: The medieval town of Loket below the castle is genuinely well-preserved — the main square, the Church of St. Wenceslas, and the streets running down to the river are all worth exploring. Allow an hour for the town alongside the castle visit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes — Loket Castle and the medieval town below it appeared as Montenegro in James Bond: Casino Royale (2006). The film used several Czech locations, and Loket served for exterior scenes set in the fictional Montenegrin town near the casino. The castle's exterior walls and some of the medieval streets are recognisable in the film. The connection has made Loket a Bond film pilgrimage site for fans.
