Beaufort Castle is one of Luxembourg's most visited and beloved historic sites — a romantic ensemble of ruined medieval towers and walls set in the wooded gorges of the Müllerthal region, known as Luxembourg's Little Switzerland. The complex comprises two distinct phases: the older medieval castle (from around 1050), now a picturesque ruin of towers, dungeons, and courtyards open to explore; and an adjacent Renaissance château built in the 16th–17th centuries, which is largely intact. The setting in the Müllerthal forest — Luxembourg's premier hiking landscape of sandstone gorges, waterfalls, and ancient trees — makes Beaufort a natural pairing with the region's walking trails. The village is also famous for Cassero, a blackcurrant liqueur produced locally that has become something of a Luxembourg signature drink.

History

A castle was established at Beaufort around 1050 and expanded through the 12th and 13th centuries. It was an important lordship within the County and later Duchy of Luxembourg. A Renaissance château was built alongside the medieval castle in the 16th and 17th centuries. The medieval section was never fully demolished but fell gradually into ruin after the 17th century. Archaeological investigation and restoration in the 20th century opened it to the public. The Renaissance château was restored for events and private use.

How to Visit

Beaufort is 35 km north-east of Luxembourg City. A car is recommended; the nearest bus connection is from Echternach (10 km). The castle is at the edge of the Müllerthal Trail hiking network — one of Europe's great multi-day walking routes. Combine with the town of Echternach (founded by St Willibrord in the 7th century) and the Müllerthal gorge trails for a full day in the region.
