Óbidos is one of Portugal's most perfectly preserved medieval walled towns, its 13th-century walls encircling a cluster of whitewashed houses, cobblestone streets, and flower-draped balconies. The castle keep at the town's highest point dates from 1195 and has been converted into a luxury pousada hotel. The town's walls are fully walkable, offering views over the surrounding countryside and the lagoon beyond. Tradition holds that King Dinis I gave the town to his queen Isabel of Aragon as a wedding gift in 1282, beginning a custom of Portuguese kings presenting Óbidos to their brides that continued for several centuries. Today the town hosts popular seasonal events including the Christmas Village (one of Europe's finest), the Chocolate Festival, and a medieval market, drawing visitors year-round.

History

The site was fortified by the Moors before being captured by Afonso Henriques, Portugal's first king, in 1148. The current castle was built after the Reconquista and expanded in the 13th and 14th centuries. Its association with Portuguese queens began in 1282 and continued until the 16th century. The 1755 earthquake caused some damage but the walls and town remained largely intact. The castle keep was converted into one of Portugal's first pousadas in 1951.

How to Visit

Óbidos is 80 km north of Lisbon on the A8 motorway. Buses run frequently from Lisbon's Campo Grande terminal (1h15). There is no train station. Day trips from Lisbon are very popular; an overnight stay in or near the walled town is recommended to experience the atmosphere after day-trippers depart.
