Trenčín Castle dominates the city of Trenčín from a dramatic rocky crag above the Váh River, its towers and walls visible for kilometres across the river valley. One of the largest castles in Slovakia, it has been a key stronghold on the route through the Váh valley for over a thousand years. A Roman inscription carved into the castle rock dates to 179 AD — evidence that a Roman garrison camped at the foot of the crag during the Marcomannic Wars. The castle's most celebrated medieval period came under Matthias Csák, 'Lord of the Váh and the Tatras', who made Trenčín his capital and defied the Hungarian crown from these walls in the early 14th century. The castle houses archaeological and historical museums and offers panoramic views over the Váh valley and the medieval old town below, connected by a covered walkway.
History
A Slavic fortification existed on the crag before the castle was built around 1000 AD as a Hungarian royal stronghold. The Roman inscription at the base dates to 179 AD. Matthias Csák made it his capital from 1302 and resisted Hungarian royal authority from its walls. The castle was expanded in Gothic and Renaissance styles through the 15th–16th centuries. It burned in 1790 and was partially rebuilt; major restoration began in the 1950s. The museum opened progressively through the late 20th century.
How to Visit
Trenčín is 120 km north-east of Bratislava on the E75 motorway. Frequent trains connect Bratislava and Trenčín (1.5 hours). The castle is above the city centre, reached by a covered walkway from the Hotel Elizabeth in the main square — a unique access route through the hotel building. The old town below the castle is attractive and walkable.
