Tour the castle with a local guide. The three family wings (Rodendorf, Rübenach, and Kempenich) rise above each other in a cluster of turrets that look almost impossible from below. Inside: the Rübenach rooms — the most complete medieval domestic interior in Germany — with original 15th-century furniture, tapestries, and kitchen equipment. The castle treasury displays armour, jewellery, and gold and silverwork accumulated by the family across eight centuries.
Drive through the Middle Moselle — the most scenic stretch of the river, with terraced Riesling vineyards rising from the water to the clifftops on both sides. Stop at the wine town of Cochem with its own hilltop castle, and drive past the 40 bends the Romans called Mosella — the little Meuse.

Why has Eltz Castle never been destroyed?
Partly geography — the castle sits in a deep forested ravine that made it difficult to besiege. Partly diplomacy — the Eltz family managed their alliances carefully through centuries of conflict. And partly luck: when a French army under Louis XIV razed most castles on the Rhine and Moselle in 1689, Eltz was spared because a family member was serving as an officer in the French court.

Yes — the Eltz family still owns and maintains the castle. Part of it is open to visitors while other wings remain the family's private residence. The Count of Eltz lives in the castle periodically throughout the year.
