About This Tour
Castle Hill is Budapest's most historic district — a limestone plateau above the Danube that has been the seat of Hungarian royalty since the 13th century. Buda Castle, the Matthias Church, and the Fisherman's Bastion together form one of Central Europe's most spectacular royal ensembles. A historian-guide navigates 800 years of Hungarian history: from the Árpád dynasty through the Ottoman occupation to the Habsburg reconstruction that created the palace you see today.

Itinerary
Walk the exterior of the vast Habsburg-era Royal Palace — rebuilt after World War II when it was almost entirely destroyed. Your guide explains the medieval castle that preceded it, the Ottoman palace that replaced it, and the neo-baroque complex that now houses the Hungarian National Gallery and Budapest History Museum. The views over the Pest riverbank and Parliament building are extraordinary.
The Church of Our Lady — known as Matthias Church — was the coronation church of Hungarian kings including Franz Joseph I in 1867. Its diamond-patterned roof tiles and neo-Gothic interior make it the most distinctive building in Budapest. Immediately beside it, the Fisherman's Bastion's seven towers (one for each Magyar tribe) form the most photographed viewpoint in the city.

Can I combine this with an Eger Castle day trip?
