About This Tour
Escape Milan for a full day on the shores of Lake Garda, Italy's largest and most scenic lake. The tour winds south along the western shore to the elegant town of Salò before boarding a boat that glides across the water to Sirmione — a needle-thin peninsula crowned by the perfectly preserved Scaligero Castle. Built by the powerful della Scala dynasty of Verona in the 13th century, the castle rises directly from the lake with its drawbridge, towers, and panoramic battlements still intact. After exploring the fortress and the nearby Roman ruins of the Grotte di Catullo, there is free time to wander Sirmione's cobbled lanes before the boat returns you across the water and back to Milan.

Itinerary
Arrive in Salò, a refined Lombard town on the western shore of Lake Garda. Walk the elegant lakeside promenade lined with Liberty-style villas, visit the unfinished Gothic cathedral, and hear the town's unusual wartime history as capital of the Italian Social Republic from 1943 to 1945. Free time for a coffee or gelato before boarding the boat.
Board a traditional lake ferry and cross to the Sirmione peninsula, with views of snow-capped mountains to the north and the rolling hills of the Veneto to the east. The boat approaches the peninsula's tip, revealing the Scaligero Castle rising straight from the water.
Enter the Scaligero Castle of Sirmione, commissioned by Cangrande I della Scala in the 13th century. The fortress is built on a rocky promontory with water on three sides, accessible only by drawbridge. Climb the towers for sweeping views over the lake and explore the walls, harbour tower, and inner keep. The castle is one of the finest examples of Scaligero military architecture in Italy.
Walk to the northern tip of the peninsula to visit the Grotte di Catullo, the largest Roman residential complex in northern Italy. Once believed to be the villa of the Latin poet Catullus, the site features vast vaulted halls, mosaic fragments, and terraced gardens overlooking the lake. The on-site museum displays finds from Roman and early medieval periods.

Insider Tips
Book Scaligero Castle tickets online in advance during peak summer months — the queue at the entrance can be long
Wear comfortable walking shoes — Sirmione's cobblestones are uneven and steep near the Roman ruins
Bring sunscreen and a hat — the boat crossing and castle battlements are fully exposed
Lake Garda can be busy in July and August; the early morning departure helps beat the crowds in Sirmione
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this tour suitable for families with children?
Yes. Children enjoy climbing the Scaligero Castle towers and the boat crossing. The walking is moderate — around 4–5 km total. Castle entrance fees for children under 18 are reduced or free.
What is the best time of year to visit?
April to June and September to October offer pleasant temperatures, smaller crowds, and calmer lake conditions for the boat crossing. July and August are beautiful but very busy in Sirmione.
