Itinerary

1

The oldest and most sacred part of the complex — the original Teutonic Knights' headquarters built in the 1270s. See the Chapter House where the knights gathered, the Church of the Virgin Mary with its extraordinary star vault, and the Golden Gate entrance portal. The views from the top tower over the Nogat river are superb.

2

The Palace of the Grand Masters — one of the finest secular Gothic buildings in Northern Europe — occupies the Middle Castle. The Summer Refectory with its palm vaulting suspended from a single central pillar is an engineering miracle. The Lower Castle contained the workshops, stables, and granaries of what was effectively a self-sufficient medieval city.
