Castles in Kosovo

Europe's newest country carries an outsized share of Balkan history in a small footprint. Prizren Fortress, rebuilt by Sultan Mehmed II on Byzantine foundations, watched the 1878 founding of the League of Prizren — the first organised Albanian national movement — directly below its walls. Kosovo's fortified hilltops trace a continuous line from Byzantine garrison to Ottoman provincial seat to the birthplace of modern Albanian and Kosovar identity.
